What’s the Process Of Replacing A Roof In Houston?

So, You Want To Replace Your Roof — Here’s What Has To Happen

When the average Houston homeowner thinks about replacing their roof — they probably think about what a big hassle it is. There are many steps involved in replacing a roof, and some of them can be time-consuming and draining. But if you know what’s in store for you, the whole roof replacement process becomes considerably less stressful. Before we start, let us know if there are any special concerns you have so we can take the necessary steps to protect your property.

Here, we detail the different steps that are involved in replacing a roof. Hopefully, once you read through this article, you’ll better understand the roof replacement process and be less daunted by it. Read more about our hassle-free service.

1. Don’t Forget The Prep

This is the only step that’s entirely on you — the homeowner. Before we show up to begin your roof replacement project, it’s important that you’re ready for us.

This means that you should take the time to remove all breakable items near your roof. Also, make sure that your driveway is free of vehicles, pets, and any other items so that we have a clear area to deliver shingles and set our trailer.

2. Demolition Time

Out with the old! It’s time for us to demolish your old roof, starting from the bottom and working our way to the top. Anything we encounter along the way that’s not part of your actual roofing structure — like vents or satellite dishes — we set aside carefully.

Using specialized tools, we’ll begin by ripping off your shingles and then get started on the underlayment. We always install your new components to a clean deck. If any of your decking is rotted or damaged, we will repair areas of concern before starting the installation.

3. Flashing

Flashing is a term that refers to the thin metal pieces that are placed around any opening in your roof — for example, your chimney. Flashing is crucial to the integrity of your roof. If you have no flashing or faulty flashing, water will find its way through your roof and into your home.

When we replace your roof, we’ll inspect your flashing to make sure that it’s not rusty and that it’s doing its job properly. If any of your flashing needs to be replaced (or is missing), we’ll include that in your roof replacement.

4. Underlayment

As you might have guessed from its name, your roof’s underlayment is the layer underneath the shingles. Part of the underlayment process is protecting your valleys and roof penetrations. This layer is important because it serves as a moisture barrier and very necessary protection from the elements.

5. Shingles

This is the part of the roofing process that homeowners are most familiar with. The image of roofers nailing in shingles on a rooftop comes to mind when thinking about a roof replacement when in fact, this step is the last part of roof construction.

We use GAF shingles which are extremely durable, and at the same time, aesthetically pleasing. Read more about why we insist on using GAF products.

6. Final Inspection

After we replace your roof, we want to be 100% certain that we did everything correctly. Our project manager does a final inspection of every component of your roof to ensure that every part of your roof is secure.

Replacing a roof can be messy business! Before we consider a job done, we always make sure to clear your lawn of debris. The project manager does a final sweep of the area with a large magnet to pick up any stray nails. We do this because we’re hyper-focused on always doing what’s best for our customers — with no exceptions. You can find out more about our core values here!
