Learning About Your Roof

Why Us

Your Roof Is A Complex System Most Find
Difficult To Evaluate Or Even Understand

But We Educate Homeowners, So They
Can Make Truly Informed Decisions

We get it – you have a busy life. Work, family, friends, children, and everything else pull you in a million different directions.

Likely, your roof is one of the last things you’ll spend time thinking about.

That’s fair.

Most homeowners don’t spend much time thinking about their roofs or know much about them at all. They’ll probably know just the basics, and usually, it’s enough to get them by.

At Houston Roofing & Construction, we understand this.

However, we like to educate homeowners when possible – whether during inspections or throughout the roof replacement process.

You never know when having more information will come in handy.

Questions Asked And Answered

We never shy away from answering questions – no matter how many you may have.

Meeting homeowners who want to understand their roof’s parts and their functions is a joy for us. It’s one more member of our community who can make informed decisions about their roof.

At Houston Roofing and Construction, we have a lot of experience and love sharing that wealth of knowledge with our Houston community. Everything from early warning signs that you may have an issue to how long of a lifespan we think your roof has left.

Don’t be shy, ask away.

Talking Through Issues

Many times, we’re called out because of a leak. The homeowner will believe it’s a problem with their roof, so they’ll call us to find the issue. Sometimes, during an inspection, we’ll discover that it isn’t a roofing issue at all.

Often, the problem comes from a wall, the siding, or a window. It can be hard to tell for the average homeowner who doesn’t see this type of thing on a regular basis, but we’re glad to come take a look.

When this happens, we will try to walk you through it.

We show you what we found and how we came to our conclusion. We’ll talk you through everything step by step so you’ll understand why and how the problem (like a leak) is happening.

Maintenance Is NECESSARY

We know that for many homeowners, their roof is more out of sight, out of mind. How often do you even look up at it when entering or leaving your driveway?

Even so, it does need some attention from time to time. And we can’t stress enough that maintenance is crucial to extending the lifespan of your roof.

The weather plays an important role, especially here in Houston. From the blistering heat during the summer to tropical storms pounding on your roof throughout hurricane season, your roof needs proper care.

Then, other parts of your roof should be regularly checked, including:

  • Vents
  • Flashing
  • Sealants
  • Chimney Crickets

Certain parts of your roof may even have odd, unique issues. Take lead jack vents, for example – squirrels, for some reason, like to chew on them. We’ve found them partially missing or worse on various occasions and needing replacing.

It’s something that happens. It’s no one’s fault, really, except, well, the squirrels.

Without regular maintenance, you may not know that this or something else is happening until there’s a leak or another issue. At that point, action has to be taken, or the risk of the problem becoming worse rises.

Regular maintenance is preventative, and prevention saves you money.

Other Parts Of Your Roof You Need To Know About

While you don’t need to know everything, there are a couple of other parts of your roof you should have a general idea about:

  • Decking: When it comes to the layers of your roof, the decking is often overlooked or unknown. Even if your shingles and everything else look fine on top of your roof, water can get in if your decking is rotted, which is a significant issue.
  • Valleys and Penetrations: Valleys are where two roof slopes meet, and penetrations are any structural design element or opening purposely placed in the roof, like a vent. Ice and water shielding should be installed and maintained to help in these areas that receive heavy water collection.
  • Skylights: These can be complex and have multiple parts. If you have one, you want to be sure it’s properly maintained to prevent leaks. While they can make a great addition to your home, they come with added upkeep.

The more penetrations on your roof, the more potential points of failure there are. Consider solar panels, for example. Every support for each panel is a possible water intrusion spot, and each panel has multiple supports. So maintenance is crucial.

Your roof protects your home and your family, and while it usually just does its job, it needs some care and attention from time to time.

Knowing more about your roof is paramount to understanding what you’re looking at or what might be happening inside your home.

And, of course, we’ll always be glad to come out and take a look.

So, if you need a roof inspection or a roof replacement in the Greater Houston area and want a contractor who ensures you have all the information possible while making decisions for your home, contact Houston Roofing & Construction to schedule a consultation.
